Don’t go away! I said it was tricky, I didn’t say it was impossible. I mean, what kind of problem solver would I be, if I was stumped by something like kid’s oral hygiene? Lead the way

If you really want your kids to brush their teeth, join them. Pick up your brush, apply some toothpaste on it and start brushing amigo. With you scrubbing your teeth by their side, your kids will be encouraged to do the same. You’ll even be able to keep an eye on their brushing technique and correct them if they’re doing it wrong.

What’s it going to take, huh?

Bribery goes a long way when it comes to conditioning your child’s behavior. Tell your kids that you’ll read them an extra bed time story, if they brush their teeth on time. Watch those rug rats scurrying away to the bathroom in a heartbeat. If bribery doesn’t do the trick, you’ll have to resort to more sinister tactics. Prevent them from watching their favorite TV show until they’ve brushed their teeth.

Who said brushing can’t be fun?

Oral hygiene doesn’t really have to be such a dull task. Find ways to liven up the mood with some fun activities. You can play your kid’s favorite songs in the bathroom, so your child associates brushing with music. Just because you brush your teeth in absolute silence, doesn’t mean your kids have to. Play ‘I spy’ with your children to distract them from the fact that they’re brushing their teeth. Games can really make the experience much more enjoyable for kids.

Time to reveal the downside

I didn’t want it to come to this, but I’ve been left with no choice.Show your kids pictures oftooth decays to scare them into brushing. Alfred Hitchcock was sent to the local police station by his father when he was 5 years old. On his father’s instructions, the officer in-charge locked up young Hitchcock for 5 minutes in a jail cell. It was a lesson to teach Hitchcock what happens to people who break the law. Needless to say, Hitchcock never broke asingle law. A little tough love goes a long way.

A visit to the dentist

If all else fails, take your kids for a visit to the dentist. They are professionals who know how to deal with unruly kids. They can teach them the essentials of oral hygiene and instill in them important habits like brushing. It’ll be more effective if your kids hear these things from someone other than yourself and who’s wearing a white lab coat.

It’s important that children cultivate the habit of brushing before bedtime while they’re still young. Or else, they’ll foregoit even after they’ve grown up.
