A Style of Braces to Suit Every Child
Some kids cannot wait to show their braces off while others worry about how braces will look and feel. At Woodbridge Kids Dentistry and Orthodontics, we offer a number of styles beyond the traditional “metal” braces.
Ceramic (clear) brackets
Avoiding orthodontic treatment because your child can’t stand the thought of wearing metal braces? Our office recommends Radiance Plus brackets – a clear, invisible alternative to conventional braces. Typically, adjustments to ceramic brackets are done every 4-6 weeks.
With the new innovation of Invisalign, wearing braces is easy! Invisalign is an alternative to braces that offers improved comfort and the freedom to remove the aligners easily when eating, brushing and for important events! Invisalign aligners are smooth, custom-made, clear plastic trays that most people don’t even know you are wearing. As the position of your teeth changes and your smile improves, it is recommended that you change aligners regularly, wearing them for 20-22 hours each day. Invisalign aligners are so comfortable and thin that you can continue to enjoy playing your favourite sports and musical instruments.
Why Do Kids Need Braces?
Children require braces for different reasons. Braces correct crooked, overlapping, and overcrowded teeth that may cause gum disease, cavities, jaw aches, headaches, bad bites, and tooth loss as your child grows older. Children’s braces also correct malocclusions, commonly known as overbites and underbites. When treatment is done early, children’s braces can prevent a wide range of serious oral health problems that manifest later in life.
Some of these tooth and jaw problems can be caused by accidents, baby tooth problems, and bad habits like nail-biting and thumb-sucking, but sometimes the need for braces is hereditary.
How Early Should I Seek Treatment for My Kids?
There is no set age for your child’s first orthodontic visit, but most pediatric dentists recommend booking an appointment by age 7 when permanent teeth start to grow in. Early treatment is always encouraged, as it allows our orthodontist to start monitoring your child’s oral development sooner (at no cost to you!), allowing us more opportunities to prevent problems and ensure the greatest potential improvement and correction of the patient’s bite.
